MATCHhotels.com Cup Round 2: Nostell Miners Welfare FC 0, Merion United 10
12th May 2009
English Premier League leaders Merion United avoided a potential banana skin away at Kwik-Fit Insurance Non-League side Nostell Miners Welfare FC in the MATCHhotels.com Cup.
England international Justin Wright continued his fine goal-scoring form in the 3rd minute and the 1985 winners never looked back, knocking in TEN goals against an inexperienced but talented Nostell team from Yorkshire. Despite the scoreline, a number of league managers will have been interested in fine defensive displays by teenagers Steven Bennett (RB) and Lee Southgate (CB) for the home side.
Merion were never in danger and led 6-0 at half time. A flurry of goals just after the hour mark, including a brace by man of the match Anthony Hussain, completed the rout.
The only negative for Merion was the sending off of Scottish winger John Hunter in the 2nd half for two bookable offences.
